Hamburgers were 15 cents. Cars were American. World War II veterans could buy houses in Torrance for a dollar down.

It was 1959. Dairies lined Hawthorne Boulevard, Artesia was a two-lane road and North High School was new.

John Newlon was a senior at North High, one of dozens of guys who belonged to a rowdy car club called The Greek Gods. Mostly they were a social group, on a perennial hunt for booze, parties and girls. They'd ditch school, drink cheap wine and brawl with guys from rival clubs.
