Local author pens story based on her horse, Barrett

At Hospira in Scripps Ranch, a specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company, Debra Karr is a test engineer, a job that requires a lot of technical writing.
Looking for a challenge, Karr, who has a master's degree in software engineering, decided to branch out. Describing technical writing as "very dry" with "no creativity," she needed another outlet and started writing lighter pieces such as poetry. Eventually, Karr tackled novel writing, and she turned to her 6-year-old horse, Barrett, for inspiration.
