Using a pen as her voice

When her marriage was ending, Caroline Jones Washington of Gary started writing about her feelings in verse and in essays, elaborating on relationships, being the victim of domestic violence and also her disappointment in a president for whom she voted but who doesn't seem to care about the plight of the working person.

"I was back in school getting my certificate as a medical assistant and my marriage was over so there was a lot to say," says Washington, a recent graduate of Sawyer College in Hammond, who works at Papa Murphy's, a pizza place in the same city. "I needed to either write them or tell them to somebody and it became a release, to help me with what I was going through."
