A hero's story

Getting married and having three children was a dream come true for Erin Hulshizer from Zearing. But, when her 2-year-old son drowned while playing near a small garden pond in her parents' backyard in Clinton, life became more of a nightmare.
"It was like a horrible dream, and (I was thinking) I am going to wake up," Hulshizer, 36, said.
Writing became therapeutic and a way to make sure the unforgettable moments and cute quirks of her little boy would be remembered. Recording Nick's stories went into writing about her intense grief and then how Nick became an organ donor.
