Mental exercises
Akron Beacon Journal, December 10, 2006 by Barbara McIntyre
Many people benefit from artistic expression, like Glee M. Hillcrest of Malvern. The collection she's titled Is There a Way Out of Here? Poems in a Life of Mental Illness opens with words like ``fear,'' ``sick'' and ``lost'' and proceeds to ``light'' and ``safe.'' The book (110 pages, softcover) costs $16.95 from www.publishamerica.com.
Hillcrest does not specify the nature of the mental illness in her book, but Akron poet Tanisha Herrin has devoted a book to her Trials and Tribulations of Depression: Haiku, Quotes and Thoughts of the Soul (84 pages, $8.71). In addition to her haiku, Herrin lists 5- and 7-syllable quotes to describe her depression: ``Troublesome issues... '' ``Feel fearful under pressure... '' Later, they show her recovery: ``Be kind to yourself... '' ``Searching for a solution.''
Herrin also has written In Memory of Nancy (64 pages, $8.31), honoring her mother, who died in 2005, and Inspire the Heart, Inspire the Mind, Inspire the Spirit (72 pages, $11.95), a motivational collection with titles like Gratitude and Diligence. Each is softcover. Trials and Nancy are from www.lulu.com; Inspire is from www.publishamerica.com.
