The Journal and Republic, December 21, 2005 by Elaine Avallone
Lowville native Bryan Higby has published a science fiction/fantasy book titled "The Diary of a Logos."
"The Diary of a Logos" has been compared to the works of James Joyce, Franz Kafka, and Mickey Spillane, by New York literary critic Robert Plyler in the Jamestown Post-Journal.
In his review, Mr. Plyler defines a 'logos' as 'as person who expounds in the idea that the true nature of the universe is expressed in spoken words."
The book's leading character, named Byron Bigby, is married to an electric typewriter. In the book, Mr. Bigby is trying to get to the "Monkey Room" behind the "Closet" where his wife is being held captive by the forces of SANITI.
The 79 page book, published in Baltimore by PublishAmerica, is available locally at Tying It All Together in Lowville and Borders in Watertown.
Mr. Higby is basically a self-taught writer beginning with his first full-length novel, "The House of Light" when he was 17.
"Mostly, I learned my craft through reading every piece of fiction I could get my hands on," says the author.
He graduated from Jefferson Community College, where he took creative writing courses. He acquired a bachelor of arts in theatre arts at SUNY-Potsdam.
He now lives in Jamestown where he is part of an "off-off Broadway theatre company" The Bunbury Theatre Company. Mr. Higby is also a filmmaker and created an independent production company, Fifth Dimension Productions. He has also co-authored several screenplays.
A sequel to "The Diary of a Logos" titled, "A Logos At Large" will possibly be published in 2006. Mr. Higby has a third book in the series, titled, "Genetic Tree" which he hopes to have coming out in 2007.
He also has written a book for young adults titled "Zoey's World," a supernatural crime story titled, "DenMark Lane" and a supernatural horror novel entitled, "The Lloyd's Boys" which is based around the local Lloyd's landmark diner in Lowville all of which are in the process of being published.
Mr. Higby and his wife, Amy, have two children Zoey Madison and Elliot Cooper. Mr. Higby is the son of Raymond and Barbars Higby of Watson, owners of Cutting Edge Video.
