Almanor Book Signing
Chester Progressive (Feather River Bulletin), November
18, 2002, by Jennifer Palmer
"She
who wants life to be a calm and tanquil; ebbing and flowing
of gentle undulations along the way should stay home and work
in the garden." The first sentence of the preface in
author Pat Gates' book, "You Can't Go Incognito in a
Battleship" plainly illustrates tht Gates may not have
spent the last few years warpped in the sheltered cocoon of
domestic comfort. In fact, it appears that her recent life
has been so filled with adventure, that she has recorded it
for the enjoyment of others in her new book published by Publish
America. A seafaring woman with a tale to tell, Gates describes
herself as "an over-the-hill school teacher" with
a purpose: to teach the history of the Navy to youngsters.
The book tells of the adventures that were experienced by
Gates and husband Cecil in their unusual travels on America's
waterways. Cecil Gates created 6 high-profile miniature ships
with the objective of using them to recreate naval history.
Traveling afforded them an opportunity to reach out to youngsters
through history and to recount the "sacrifices made to
give us the freedoms we enjoy." Their adventures took
them thousands of miles by boat and ship to various notable
American landmarks, including NY Harbor to celebrate the nation's
200th birthday and to Pearl Harbor for the 50th anniversary
memorial. Former teachers for 30 years the Gateses are retired
and currently reside at Lake Almanor. Pat Gaes will be holding
a book signing on Thursday, Nov. 21, 6-8 PM at the Plumas
Co. Library Chester Branch, located at 210 1st Ave, Chester.
Her book will be available for sale at the signing. Her book
is also available through www.publishamerica.com, www.amazon.com
and www.borders.com
