A lifetime of adventure
Fauquier Citizen, October 12, 2006 by Pamela Barnett
It's tough not to like Jimmy "J.R." Calhoun. The Culpeper, Va., resident possesses the tough-guy swagger of a man who spent nearly 40 years in the U.S. Navy, but he also projects an easy-going warmth, charm and zest for life that is hard to resist. A natural storyteller, Calhoun can make a scene come alive with his keen, frequently humorous observations that are imbued with the same sense of mischievousness that has threaded its way through his life.
It was his experiences as a naval limited duty officer (LDO) that forms the basis for Calhoun's recently published memoirs, "The Adventure." In the book, slated for an Oct. 23 release, Calhoun recounts his steady rise through the ranks, from most junior enlistee, to captain - the highest rank attainable for an LDO - the assignments he took in far-flung locations, and the hi-jinks he saw or took part in along the way.
